Intersectionality originated with the examination of the dual forces of race and gender on the lives of Black women resulting in their marginalization in society. It has become a framework for understanding how multiple social identities such as race, gender, sexual orientation, social-economic status, disability and more, intersect at the individual level resulting in the experience of privilege and/or oppression at the social-structural level. Not recognizing intersectionality leads to an erasure of people and their identities. An intersectionality framework must be applied to all social justice work.
