Becoming a Leader

Since childhood, my life was filled with role models of strong women leaders who were “firsts” in their positions.  Those early influences set the framework for the leadership roles of my life.

I wish I could tell you it’s always been easy – but I can’t.

Instead – I’ll share a very important but difficult story that changed my life and helped shape me into the leader and mentor I am today.

There was a day when I was all set to give up my dreams.  I’d been treated so unfairly and met with such hardships that I didn’t know if I even wanted to reach the goals I had set for my life. But then something important happened ….

You see, I had encountered a woman in my town that everyone both loved and feared who was a “first” to reach a powerful position in society.  She was also a leader in an organization that gave scholarships to high school girls to help them complete their studies. One month, I was one of the lucky ones selected for this honor. This woman decided that I had “potential” so she took my under her wings to mentor me on important life ideas. When I prepared to leave on a particular academic journey, she looked at me and said “I’m keeping my eye on you. When you get back, you answer to me about what you achieved.”

It was the memory of those words along with the hopes and dreams of my parents and grandmother that came back to me as I lay crying on my bed that summer afternoon feeling defeated.  I had earned the highest scores in the course on all the tests, but the professor gave me one of the lowest grades because he “didn’t believe in a woman studying business at that level.” When I found out he had left for a 3 month overseas trip and I couldn’t fight the grade without him being there I seriously considered dropping out of college. It was almost too much. How many times could I get shot down after trying so hard – because of unfairness of someone’s personal prejudices?

Yet, I knew that if I returned to my hometown without finishing my course of study, I would have to face my family and “that woman.”  Something in me knew that I couldn’t fail – I had to get up and fight once more to meet my goals.

There were mentors waiting on my good report – and I wasn’t going to let them down. I got up – choose to find the lesson in the pain – and went on to reach my goal.

My life was never the same.  After that,  I went on to achieve many other goals.

After graduating with a marketing degree, I pursued my interest in working overseas by joining the Peace Corps. I worked in West Africa organizing and developing food cooperatives.   Since then I’ve been to other African nations, Europe and most U.S. states for work or personal interests.

My education includes a B.S. in Marketing, an M.S. in Organizational Behavior, another M.A. in Organization Development and a Ph.D. in Human and Organization Systems.   When I started my doctoral program, I used the inspiration of my entrepreneurial father and leadership and mentoring background of my mother to focus my studies on women’s grassroots and community leadership styles. My dissertation research resulted in finding a unique empowerment leadership style of women who are leaders, mentors, and roles models in their profession, community or personal endeavors.

Over time, life taught me that as the world continues to evolve, every empty experience that makes people say “I never thought I’d see it happen” will be filled by a brave leader who refuses to give up on her dream.

When I decided to use what I’d learned to help others run towards their brilliance, taking the lessons found in their pain to fuel their journey, leadership roles have been in my life ever since.

I’ve shared this information as a keynote speaker and presenter at national and international conferences. I’ve even had the pleasure of delivering two commencement speeches, appear in the media, and serve as a peer reviewer for a prominent small business journal.

In visiting Spain and South Africa, my intercultural awareness of economic development was expanded as I marveled at the leadership abilities of women who live and work in a cornucopia of leadership positions.

As a faculty leader, diversity director, and professional presenter, I’ve gained experiences that are beneficial to others in their leadership pursuits. While serving at a major University, I gained the confidence of my peers to serve as a faculty leader for five years, an experience that let me use my collaborative skills to open communication that helped move the organization to its stated goals with groups that often experienced broad differences of opinions. My leadership role as a diversity specialist broadened horizons for more professionals in public and private organizations and businesses.

I love writing and have multiple published books, an article in a leading leadership manual published by John Wiley publishers, several dozen other published articles, and have coached others to write and publish their works. The great thing is I love work with women from around the world to help them become great business professionals and leaders.

Thanksgiving 2014

Another Thanksgiving Day. This is usually a good day, when we get ready to visit family or have them over for dinner. Today my husband and I go to visit his family. We’re looking forward to it but not with the same feeling of lightness and joy that usually accompanies this day. Today we’re thinking of Ferguson and the sad events that put a damper on America again. Another Black man shot in the streets with not justice for his murder. Another show in this nation of the inequality of citizens based on the color skin alone.

There is a deep sadness that comes with this truth.

* It hurts to know that certain citizens of a a nation are not safe, that just living can be a dangerous activity in some neighborhoods.

* It hurts to know that the act of walking home from the store, buying a package of candy and talking on the phone could open you up to being shot dead, just because someone felt like killing you.

* It hurts to know that being 12 years old, alone in a park by yourself means opening you up to being shot dead within 2 seconds by a police “just because.”

* It hurts to know that you can be talking about Jesus to people in your neighborhood in the morning, then shot dead and left to rot in the street like an animal even though you had your hands up in surrender that afternoon.

* It just hurts to know these things as facts of life in America.

My mother marched with Martin Luther King, Jr in Selma Alabama back in 1965. My sister, brothers and I were raised fighting for civil rights and freedom of ALL people, despite, race, creed or color. Yet, today, I know the fear of consistent worry that a member of my family could walk down a street and be shot, killed, and forgotten like nothing ever happened.

This morning, my daughter in law helped relieve some of the pain by sharing a picture she found of people from around the world who are seeing what’s happening in America. They too are people who know pain of being hurt and having lives that don’t matter – just because. It helped.

It helped to remind me that there are people from all walks of life that actually do care, that honestly don’t agree with the atrocities that are happening, that they really stand in unity with this fight for equality.

The most important thing to remember is that in all of this, while families are getting together to celebrate, there are families that are missing loved ones this Thanksgiving because they were shot dead – just because. We must remember those families in our prayers – remember that despite it all, God is STILL in control. Remember that most of those killed knew the Lord and are with Him this Thanksgiving. They are not being judged by earthly mistakes but by the condition of their heart towards Him. Remember that God has not left or forsaken ANY of His people – we have to remember this, through the pain, through the fear, through the reality of what we live in.

Does it ever feel like life is almost too much to handle?  At times, everyone feels pressures that they have to deal with in the normal scheme of life.  Some people find simply sitting in traffic can be a huge problem, so what affects each person has to be put into perspective.  So what happens when you get to the point where even the smallest things get you ticked off? 

This can happen when life starts to dump things on you in what seems like a continual stream of negative events culminating in a series of serious events.  These events may have taken place over a matter of weeks, months or even years. But, one thing has built up on top of another and brought you to the place of being so highly stressed that you can hardly stand it. 

If you are in this situation, it not something to take lightly.  Reaching this point can lead to developing depressive symptoms that range from being lethargic to wondering if there is no way out and want relief right now.

However, there is another way.

The key word here is culmination. One situation alone won’t often bring you to the conclusion that you are taking on too much.  But, facing a series of ongoing challenges that haven’t been dealt with becomes the problem.  Burying your head in the sand hoping the problem will just go way is not the answer. Instead, a culmination of unresolved problems lead to issues of stress management. 

Stress is a part of everyday life. There is good stress and bad stress. Good stress can be a challenge to the mind and body. You view the situation as a way to better yourself and grow, in relationships and as a person. Bad stress, on the other hand, has negative effects on the mind leading to manifestations in your body like ulcers, headaches and weight gain.

Coping with stress is the first step to stop the pile-up. How can you combat stress? These are some of the best ways:

* Exercise – It increases blood flow and lowers blood pressure. Your body gets stronger and can fight against the stress that attacks it. Also, you increase your focus and clarity so you can see your problems in a new light.

* Eating healthy – Choosing foods that enhance health goes a long way to making you stronger in the body and mind. You are not weighed down by toxins and excess fat.

* Therapy – Talk to someone. They can help you put your problems into perspective and develop a plan for overcoming them one step at a time. Changing your thinking is a big part of that and cognitive therapy can help.

* Finding ways to relax – Take a break from work and the screaming kids to do something that you like. Life isn’t all about working and paying bills. When you are engrossed in a fun task, everything else melts away.

* Learning your self-worth – Surround yourself with life-affirming people who don’t have to put you down to lift themselves up. Find the good in you and remind yourself of it often.

* Get organized – There is peace in scheduling. Place bills in a rack according to due date so you don’t miss anything. Limit kids to one regular activity so you don’t get overwhelmed (and neither do they). Prioritize your work to get it all done in a timely manner instead of at the last minute.

Life compounds daily when we don’t face it head on. When it gets to be too much, go back to the beginning and start again.

Do you worry about getting older?  I know that’s not easy to bring up but sometimes you just have to face reality.  At some point, if we live long enough we’ll grow older and eventually we’ll get old.  

It almost seems impossible doesn’t it?  I remember looking at my parent’s friends when I was young and thinking “I’ll never be that old.”  Of course, being polite ladies, they never talked about their age.  So I found out by overhearing a conversation or trying to make a guess.  I thought they were very beautiful but getting older meant having to face the fact that life is short.

This thought used to hit me at times.  It wasn’t a bad thing.  I’m always grateful for the years I’ve had so far and look forward to many more.  I come from a family with longevity.  Elders live into their 90’s and some of my ancestors easily hit the hundreds.  So it’s my hope that the Lord has longevity in my future too.  Not just for me but to be able to watch my children grow old and my grandchildren grow up to become the fabulous adults I know they will be.

The one question I used to ponder was, am I doing what I was destined to do in life?  Am I fulfilling the goals I was born for?   Perhaps this is a question we all ask at some point.  It takes time and thought to get a breakthrough to feel comfortable that you are living your life in the right direction.
